Interpretation of capture rate

A low target density of 0.01 LH\( _{2} \) density is chosen such that capture proceeds predominantly from the F=0 hyperfine state of the muonic hydrogen atom. Thus the initial state is rather precisely defined. This is a unique advantage of our method, as it eliminates the significant uncertainties due to $p\mu p$ formation and associated ortho-para transitions, which have clouded the interpretation of earlier experiments. As estimated in our proposal, $p\mu p$ effects can be constrained to below 0.3% of \( \Lambda _{s} \). A further reduction of this correction is expected from the improved \( \lambda _{OP} \) measurement in experiment E766 at TRIUMF, which has collected data, but, to our knowledge, has not presented its results yet[19].
