Beam time request

In fall 2001, we expect to be ready with major parts of the new apparatus including the clean TPC, see time chart Fig. 26. Therefore, we request for the months November/December 2001 a beam period of 4 weeks in area \( \mu E4 \) and 2 weeks setup time preceeding this period.

Immediately after the shutdown 2001/2002, in March or April 2002, we may want to continue testing and commissioning those parts of the apparatus that might not have worked satisfactorily yet in 2001. We request for this period 2 weeks of muon beam in area \( \mu E4 \).

In summer 2002, the complete experimental setup including Sindrum chambers and the full plastic hodoscope will be ready. We request 2 weeks of \( \mu E4 \) beam in July 2002 for commissioning the full setup.

In fall 2002, we request for a first main production period 2 months of beam time in area \( \mu E4 \). This beam time should be sufficient to reach a statistics of close to 10\( ^{10} \) events in the global pile up mode for \( \mu ^{-} \) and as well \( \mu ^{+} \) particles, and about twice this statistics for events analyzed using local pile up rejection.

Depending on the outcome of this production run and its analysis, we will consider a continuation in 2003, possibly under improved conditions. The reconstruction of the \( \mu E4 \) beamline planned for 2003 may be of considerable benefit if the luminosity of the muon beam will be enhanced as predicted.
