Run Coordinator's Report for 31 March Swing to 1 April Swing
Summary
We ran pretty well overnight; vertical beam steering reduced halo
rates to nominal values. Beam back very late into Day shift after beam
studies and installation of Hall A laser in injector due to problems
getting beam out of injector and various beamline issues.
Significant News
- Harp scans performed (for pictures see ELOG entry 1203850).
IHA3HG0 Harp still very noisy.
- After Harp scans, MCC lowers vertical position at G0 and G0B
BPM's by approximately 0.5 mm, which reduces halo rates to nominal
values.
- The new interface box for the DMCH's apparently does not work
in 120 Hz mode. 120 Hz runs unable to be performed over the last day.
This will be addressed by Paul with input from Orsay.
- Relatively smooth LH2 running over night, but MCC reports
systematic shifts in E-lock cavities. BPM's near these cavities confirm
that this effect is a real energy shift in the beam.
- Beam taken at 9:00 for beam studies and to install Hall A laser
in injector.
- Paul investigates interface box for DMCH's: New interface box
reduces ratio of measured asymmetry widths to statistical widths for
Detectors 1 and 2 of Octants 2 and 6 (but not for Detectors 13 and 14
in Octants 4 and 8), but does not work in 120 Hz mode. For now, other
ideas emerge, we will go back to the old interface box to ensure we can
perform 120 Hz runs.
- A few green block runs for French DNL, and NA DNL runs studies
performed while beam is gone.
- After discussions with PD and MCC folks at 8:00 meeting, they
agree to spend 1 hour after beam is back as "Recovery" time after beam
studies to investigate halo issue.
- Difficulty getting beam out of the injector, and into Hall C.
Beam not back until almost the end of Day shift, so halo studies get
scrubbed.
- Setup for BCM calibration (rock RHWP until we find a zero
crossing in charge asymmetry).
Plans
- BCM Calibration.
- Wells plot data.
- RIP scans and get feedback operational.
- LH2 production running until 9:00 on 4/2/04 when MCC takes beam
for beam studies.
Concerns
- Spikes in French electronics
- Beam steering: Harp and BPM positions off by more than 0.5 mm
from Moller BPM's all the way down to the G0 target.
- HALO! More specifically, the beam steering issue above which we
believe is the cause of the halo, as the absolute halo rates are only
X2 relative to nominal.
- Non-statistical widths in detectors 13 and 14 of octants 4 and
8.
- Non-understood influence of Interface Box to DMCH's. Spare does
not work in 120 Hz mode.
- Apparent increasing frequency of NA LTD errors. (This should be
alleviated by Brian's work on the LTD's).
- Crosstalk with target IOC and target FSD box when the Musson
box is
rebooted remotely
- Changed behavior of BPM 3H00C Y position with respect to other
hall
BPMs.
- Discrepancy in beam current measured by BCM1/2 and the MPS BCM
(This should be cured after the BCM calibrataion.).
